Safely Shipping Recalled Lithium Ion Batteries

After reports of lithium-ion batteries overheating, many have been recalled. This includes small batteries for mobile phones and large batteries for appliances, electric vehicles, and other applications. Damaged, defective, and recalled lithium batteries are hazardous and require careful handling. Lithium metal is prone to "thermal runaway," a chain reaction of chemicals that can start a fire. After a lithium battery recall, you’ll need safe, secure shipping solutions to protect your team and your inventory. As a leading manufacturer of wood crates for shipping damaged batteries and other hazardous materials in Michigan and across the country, Ameripak’s selection of wood crate styles includes:

  • Commercial Wood Crates
  • Industrial Wood Crates

Testing & Compliance for Transporting Batteries

The U.S. Department of Transportation regulates lithium batteries as a hazardous material. Recalled, damaged, and defective lithium batteries are a health and safety risk. They can short circuit if exposed to moisture, posing a serious fire hazard. As such, they must conform to specific requirements when transported by any means. When it comes to transporting dangerous goods, we’re serious about safety. Ameripak technicians design CAD-engineered crates to ensure a custom fit for shipping recalled batteries back. Our testing facilities test and certify our final designs for each project per Title 49 Sec. 173.185: Packaging for Lithium Cells and Batteries and Title 49 Sec. 178: Performance Testing for Large Packaging (50D Wood Crates).

Lithium Ion Battery Recall Program - DDR Kits

A large battery recycler approached Ameripak packaging engineers in need of a solution to ship recalled lithium-ion batteries for one of their energy storage solution products. The packaging needed to be UN compliant with DOT Title 49 CFR 173.185(f) and designed to accomodate various distribution environments. Each crate was lined with fire-resistant foam to ensure that the crate met the requirement of being surrounded by "cushioning material that is non-combustible. The crate also included absorbent mat material to meet the "absorbent" requirement of 49 CFR 173.185(f)
